WA Wines named in Top World Cabernets

The April 2017 issue of Decanter Magazine has seen seven Western Australian wines make it into the 35 Top New World Cabernets list. Plantagenet’s 2013 Cabernet made it to number six on the list, followed by Ringbolt scoring two mentions at numbers eight & 13 for their 2012 and 2014 wines respectively. The 2014 Vasse Felix Cabernet made it to number 14, with the 2012 Hamelin Bay and 2014 Flametree making it to 19 and 20. Vintage Harvest Well Underway for Geographe Wineries

The Geographe wine region has one of the earlier harvest seasons out of all regions, and many wineries are already underway with picking their 2017 vintage. Green Door Wines in the Ferguson Valley have begun crushing their chardonnay, and St Aidan Wines has begun picking theirs. Oakway Estate is also picking chardonnay, with 2.5 tonnes of sauvignon blanc ready for picking too. UK Buyers Impressed by WA’s Wine Regions

Independent wine buyers from the UK took a 10-day tour around WA’s fine wine regions last month. Meirion Williams, from Yapp Brothers Wine Merchants, said both the Margaret River and Great Southern wine regions were known in the UK, but the group wanted to learn more about the other high quality regions in the state. The group knew the wines of WA were of a high quality, but were surprised of the consistent quality and diverse styles across all regions. Urge To Support Local Businesses Stronger Than Ever

Labor leader Mark McGowan is urging West Australians to come together and support the local businesses now more than ever after much of WA had been declared a natural disaster zone. The recent flooding in the state particularly affected the Swan Valley, with major risk of fruit splitting wiping out thousands of dollars of crops. Grape growers said berries start to split because they’ve taken on too much water, and some fruits even start to rot among the bunches.
